Abita Springs, Louisiana (Sundays In My City)

This is the new Gumbo blog, folks. For writing and images, you will need to come here, as the kitchen is closed at The Honduras Gumbo.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis stuffed alligator is dressed and ready for Mardi Gras. She’s on display at the UCM (pronounced you see ‘um) Museum in Abita Springs, Louisiana. I live just outside the city limits of this small town. The place has the feel of 1950s Americana. The quote from Garrison Keillor comes to mind when I swing through the traffic circle in the middle of town. It’s a place “where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.”  Since the locale is Louisiana, it’s borderline eccentric, too.

  1. I’ll ask what most readers are wondering but are too polite to inquire. Are you an heiress or something? You have no visible employment, and you’re way too young to be retired. I imagine your church was supporting you in Honduras, but now? You must be an heiress.

    What’s up with dat?

  2. Spent yesterday with some folks from Baton Rouge and then reading your post: Talk about missing the Bayou Country for sure. I know you will find some work for sure.

    1. I didn’t know you were from Louisiana. Maybe I did, but I forgot. I was in Africa in May. I was visiting Zambia. It would be nice to go back but I it’s too expensive just to go on a whim.
